Participants didn't know the ratio. They were asked to label each post as "AI-generated" or "human-created" and rate their confidence on a scale of 1 to 5. They also rated each post on quality, engagement potential, and brand authenticity.
The Results

Where AI Passes - and Where It Fails
The pattern is clear. AI is essentially undetectable for generic, informational content. Tips lists, how-to threads, product descriptions with standard marketing language - participants couldn't reliably tell the difference. In some cases, they actually rated AI-generated tips posts higher than human ones for clarity and structure.
But the moment content required any of the following, humans pulled ahead dramatically:
1. Authentic brand voice. When we included Instagram captions that were supposed to reflect a specific brand's quirky, irreverent tone, participants spotted the AI versions 74% of the time. AI can mimic a generic "friendly brand" voice, but it struggles with the idiosyncrasies that make a brand sound like itself. The AI captions were described as "close but sterile" and "like someone doing an impression of the brand."
2. Personal storytelling. Twitter threads that told personal anecdotes - a founder's journey, a marketer's embarrassing mistake - were the second-easiest to detect. Participants noted that AI stories "had all the right beats but no surprising details" and "felt like a composite of every LinkedIn story ever written."
3. Emotional resonance. This was the biggest gap. Posts designed to evoke emotion - vulnerability, humor, frustration - were correctly identified 77% of the time. Human posts had what one participant called "the messy parts" - imperfect phrasing, unexpected turns, genuine voice. AI posts were smooth and polished in a way that ironically made them feel less real.

The Quality Paradox
Here's where it gets interesting. Even when participants couldn't identify AI content, they often rated it slightly lower on "engagement potential" and "would I follow this account." The average quality scores tell the story:
